Adding Friends
Before you can message someone on Hashee, you need to add them as a friend. This ensures that both sides agree to the connection, and it also triggers the automatic exchange of encryption keys that keeps your conversations private.
Three Ways to Add Friends
1. Search by ID
Every Hashee user has a unique ID (like @alice). To find someone:
- On the Messages tab, tap the + button in the top-right corner.
- Select Add Friend.
- Type the person’s Hashee ID in the search box.
- When their profile card appears, tap Send Friend Request.
- Wait for them to accept.
2. QR Code or Link
This is the fastest way when you are face-to-face or sharing online:
- Tap the + button and select Scan.
- Scan the other person’s QR code with your camera.
- Their profile page opens. Tap Send Friend Request.
You can also show your own QR code by switching to My QR Code on the scan page. If someone shares a link instead, tapping it opens the same profile page.
3. From a Group Chat
If you are in a group conversation with someone you would like to add:
- Open the group chat and tap the title at the top to view the group profile.
- In the member list, tap the person’s avatar.
- On their profile page, tap Send Friend Request.
What Happens After You Send a Request
- The other person sees your request in their Contacts tab under the pending requests section.
- They can accept or decline your request.
- If they decline, you can send a new request later.
- Once accepted, a conversation is automatically created between you and encryption keys are exchanged in the background. You can start messaging right away.
Setting a Nickname for a Friend
After adding a friend, you can set a private nickname for them. This nickname is only visible to you and shows up in place of their display name in your conversation list and messages.
To set a nickname:
- Open the conversation with your friend.
- Tap the title at the top to open the conversation profile.
- Tap Nickname and enter your preferred name.
Blocking Someone
If you want to stop someone from contacting you:
- Open their profile page (tap their avatar in a conversation or search for them).
- Tap Block.
When you block someone:
- Any existing friend relationship is automatically removed.
- They cannot send you friend requests. Their requests will appear to stay in “pending” status forever — they will not know they are blocked.
- Blocking only affects private messages. If you and the blocked person are in the same group, you can still see each other’s messages in that group.
You can manage your block list in Settings > Account & Security > Block List.
Removing a Friend
You can remove a friend at any time:
- Open the conversation with them.
- Tap the title to open the conversation profile.
- Tap Remove Friend.
After removing a friend:
- The conversation stays in your list so you can still read past messages, but you cannot send new ones.
- The other person is not notified. If they try to send you a message later, they will be told you are no longer friends.
- Either of you can send a new friend request to reconnect.
