Adding a New Device

When you sign in on a new device, here is what happens:

If you have another device online

  1. Open Hashee on the new device and sign in.
  2. On your existing device, you will see a prompt to authorize the new device.
  3. Scan the QR code shown on the new device using your existing device.
  4. The new device receives your encryption keys securely.

This is the preferred method. It is quick and avoids needing to enter your protection password.

If no other device is online

  1. Sign in on the new device.
  2. Enter your protection password (the one you set during registration).
  3. Your encrypted key backup is downloaded from the cloud and decrypted on the device.

After setup, on native apps, your keys are stored in the device’s secure area and you can use biometrics (Face ID, fingerprint, device PIN) for future unlocks.

What Syncs Across Devices

Your conversation list and knowledge base sync automatically across all devices. This includes:

  • Which conversations you have
  • Unread message counts
  • The most recent message preview for each conversation
  • Your saved items in the knowledge base

What Does Not Sync Automatically

Message history is stored locally on each device. When you sign in on a new device, you will see your conversations but not the messages from before you set up that device.

For conversations without local history, you will see a message:

“Message history is stored on your original device. You can export a backup from that device and import it here, or use the data migration tool.”

Transferring Message History

To bring your messages to a new device:

  1. Make sure both devices are on the same account and connected to the network.
  2. On the new device, start the migration process from Settings > Data Migration.
  3. Scan the QR code with your existing device to establish a direct connection.
  4. Your message history is transferred directly between devices (encrypted the entire way).

This transfer happens device-to-device. The server never sees your message content during migration.

Device Limits

You can be signed in on up to 5 devices at the same time. If you try to add a sixth:

  • You will be asked to remove one of your existing devices first.
  • Devices that have been inactive for 30 days are automatically signed out.

Managing Your Devices

Go to Settings > Account & Security > Device Management to:

  • View all signed-in devices — See the name, type, and last active time for each device.
  • Remove a device — Sign out a device remotely. This is useful if you lost a device or want to revoke access.
  • Verify device keys — Compare security numbers between two devices to confirm they are both legitimate (no interception).

Web vs. Native Differences

The web version is great for quick access from any computer, but there are a few differences compared to native apps:

FeatureNativeWeb
Storage capacityLarge (many GB)Limited (50-100 MB)
Key unlockBiometric (Face ID, fingerprint)Protection password every time
Background notificationsYesLimited by browser
Data migrationSend and receiveNot available
File previewPDF, Office, code highlightingPDF and images only
Local backup exportYesNot available

If you start on the web and enjoy the experience, consider installing the native app for the best performance and security.
